چکیده

The Pacific mackerel Scomber japonicus aquaculture is receiving growing attention, and further development of this industry expected to protect wild stocks. Information on S. hematology very limited. Therefore, the present study aimed provide hematological serum chemistry profiles associated with sex some seasonal variations in from Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico. Fish were sampled April (spring) August (summer). Results showed that condition factor all blood parameters analyzed male female not affected by (P > 0.05). seasonality effect was observed such as mean corpuscular hemoglobin, total protein, globulin, triglycerides exhibited lower values compared < While white cell count higher 0.05) April. fish during two sampling times possibly a heterogeneous group ages (1 3 years) lengths ranging 20 30 cm. Consequently, there an urgent need follow doing reference interval databases assess health status under different conditions.

Nuclear and mtDNA lineage diversity in wild and cultured Pacific lion-paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus (Baja California Peninsula, Mexico)

Pacific lion-paw scallops were collected from natural aggregations in Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Pacific Ocean), the Gulf of California, and from aquaculture facilities for genetic diversity analyses. Mitochondrial DNA sequencing uncovered two highly supported clades separated by 2.5% divergence. Data from ten microsatellite markers suggest individuals from these mitogroups are introgressed, raising...

Heavy metals in benthic organisms from Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil.

The marine ecosystems of Todos os Santos Bay (TSB, The State of Bahia, Brazil) have been impacted by the presence on its coast of a large metropolitan area as well as of chemical and petrochemical activities. Despite its ecological importance, there is a lack of scientific information concerning metal contamination in TSB marine biota. Thus, we analyzed concentrations of metals in four species ...

Steroidogenic and maturation-inducing potency of native gonadotropic hormones in female chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus

BACKGROUND The gonadotropins (GtHs), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are produced in the pituitary gland and regulates gametogenesis through production of gonadal steroids. However, respective roles of two GtHs in the teleosts are still incompletely characterized due to technical difficulties in the purification of native GtHs. METHODS Native FSH and LH were pu...

Differential population structuring of two closely related fish species, the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), in the Mediterranean Sea.

Population genetic structures of the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied in the Mediterranean Sea. Fragments of 272 bp (S. scomber) and 387 bp (S. japonicus) of the 5'-end of the mitochondrial control region were sequenced from spawning individuals collected off the coasts of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. High levels of mitochondrial control regi...

Locomotion in scombrid fishes: morphology and kinematics of the finlets of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus.

Finlets are small non-retractable fins located on the dorsal and ventral margins of the body between the second dorsal and anal fins and the tail of scombrid fishes. The morphology of the finlets, and finlet kinematics during swimming in a flow tank at speeds of 0.8-3. 0 fork lengths s(-1), were examined in the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus. Functionally, S. japonicus has five dorsal and anal...
